America's Most Influential Farmer

Joel Salatin is from my birthland, and he's a fascinating man. When my wife and I used to work together at a natural grocery in Virginia, we carried Joel's goods and worked with him quite often. He knows what's up. Check it out:

"Joel Salatin is a self-described environmentalist capitalist lunatic farmer, or as the New York Times calls him, "the high priest of the pasture." You may remember him from The Omnivore's Dilemma, in which he was profiled at length by Michael Pollan. Salatin's innovative farming system—where the animals live according to their "ness," the earth is used for symbiosis, and happiness and health is key—has gained attention from around the country, and he travels in the winter giving lectures and demonstrations. He is the author of a number of books including Holy Cows and Hog Heaven, Everything I Want to Do Is Illegal, You Can Farm, Pastured Poultry Profit$, and Family Friendly Farming. I talked to Joel Salatin about how he got started farming, his appearance in the new film Food, Inc., the government's role in farm politics, and his ideas on the future of food. Suffice it to say, it's not as simple as conventional vs. organic."

EATS ---> 2nd Ave. Deli

the work of art above is what i enjoyed for lunch today. i'm lucky my desk did not collapse. every last bite is gone now.

every once in awhile, one gets a craving for a gastro experience unlike any other on this earth: the classic jewish deli sandwich. with manhattan rapidly becoming home to a slew of fucking pinkberrys, starbucks, and the like, historic cultural landmarks such as jewish delis and bodegas are closing their doors forever. 2nd ave deli has been a manhattan mainstay for many years. the original 2nd ave deli was located ON second avenue from 1954 until 2006, when the rising rents of the east village forced them to close. fear not - 2 years later they returned with a new location at 33rd st. and 3rd avenue - a few blocks away and a few bucks cheaper in rent. just like it's sibling Katz's delicatessen, the sandwiches are piled high. very, very high. the meat is so tasty. the mustard and dressings are oozing. the rye is perfectly holding it together just enough to keep it from exploding. the sandwiches are, by my account, a true work of art. and, just like Katz's, this food isn't exactly the cheapest sandwich you can get. but in this case i excuse the price of admission since i don't know anybody who could eat these day after day, all the time. this is a once in awhile type of deal. and it RULES.

Dinosaur Jr. @ Music Hall of Williamsburg 06.25.09

last thursday was a weird day. Sky Saxon, Farrah Fawcett, and Michael Jackson (!!!) all leave us in the same day?? also right outside our apartment some dude crashed his motorcycle into a giant track at super high speed, right after i walked in the door. don't know if he lived but there were ambulances and cop cars everywhere. there were chunks of broken motorcycle all over the street for days. bummer.

things improved greatly when we hopped the train with our Dinosaur Jr. tickets, picked up some fish tacos from the Endless Summer truck, and headed down to the waterfront to enjoy em. then we went to rock:: Dinosaur Jr. played Music Hall of Williamsburg. Screaming Females opened. i had never seen them play before, but they were super. and Dinosaur was amazing. soo sick. picked up the Farm 2xLP and have been spinning it all weekend. those guys are like a fine wine - they seem to just keep getting better as they get older release records.. here's a video somebody near me in the audience took. sound is kinda bad though..

well i didn't do a very good job of documenting the trip to the baja (our unquestionable bar of choice in staunton), the new stand-up bass shop downtown, the strange abandoned mental hospital-turned-luxury condos tour (complete with a surprise "self-guided" tour of the super-vibey abandoned main building - not yet converted into luxury condos itself), the sunday backyard chill fest, the depot brunch, and all the rest, but here's what i got...

woorijip + rocket man, early de-evolution

picked up lunch from Woorijip today. delicious as always. i swear i have dreams about this place. i'm not kidding about this. this has been one of my favorite weekday lunch spots for over two years, even though i don't make the trek up to Koreatown as much as i'd like to. Woorijip is a modest Korean cafeteria in the heart of main drag Koreatown - 32nd Street between Broadway and 5th Avenue. they serve amazing no frills home-style Korean cuisine for next-to-nothing prices. i picked up the always-awesome assorted Kimbap since i was on-the-go.
